Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you work from photographs ?
Since most people are reluctant to sit hours for a portrait, and our customers are located all over the country, we ask for 2 or more good, clear photographs. Please indicate the main ones to work from, and include notes to help the artist determine the best expression, coloring, etc.  All original photos will be returned to customer.
Virtually any subject is suitable for a portrait - children, adults, pets, weddings, homes, etc.  The artist can do many things with your original photographs to create the perfect portrait to your specifications.

Icon Art Studio portraits are true original works of art, hand rendered to your specifications. They are not digitally manipulated photos printed on canvas, like some websites who market cheap "portraits" from photos on the internet. Each R.J. Romero portrait is a unique creation by the artist, using the materials and techniques utilized by master portrait painters for centuries.

Can You Do Posthumous Portraits?
Many people ask if it is possible to have a portrait painted of a loved one that has passed away, using one or two snapshots that still exist.  As above, the quality of the photos is key to obtaining an accurate finished portrait.  In a case like this, you should send the pictures you have for us to review. The artist will contact you to discuss with you what is possible. Please be assured that the artist will always undertake to do the best job possible given the original source material, and will always try very hard to capture the personality, likeness, and qualities of your loved one. However, this can sometimes be extremely difficult from a single or poor snapshot.

Can you combine /images from more than one photograph into a single painting?
Yes, we can! You can send several photographs and have people from them placed together into a single portrait. Simply give us detailed instructions when placing your order, telling us how you want the artist to combine these photos into one painting. We don't charge extra for this service.

      We can make several modifications:
  - Enhance/change colors
  - Change backgrounds
  - Correct/change proportions
  - Eliminate unwanted persons/objects
  - Combine subjects/objects from several photographs

What is Pastel?

Pastel is nearly pure pigment held together with just enough binder to form a stick. It is NOT chalk. Historically, its origin can be traced back to the Sixteenth Century, when Guido Reni, Jacopo Bassano, and Federigo Barocci were notable practitioners. Rosalba Carriera, 1675-1750, a Venetian lady artist, was the first to make consistent use of pastel. Chardin, 1699-1779, did portraits with a hatching stroke, while Quentin de la Tour, 1704-1788, preferred the blended, velvety finish. A galaxy of artists have used pastel as finished work, rather than for preliminary sketches: Copley, Delacroix, Millet, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Redon, Vuillard, Bonnard, and Whistler, just to list the more familiar names. Degas was the most prolific user of pastel, and its champion, for he raised it to the full brilliance of oil. His protege, Mary Cassatt, introduced the Impressionists and pastel to her wealthy friends in Philadelphia and Washington, and thus to the United States. Today, many of our most renowned living artists have distinguished themselves in pastels, and have enriched the world with this glorious medium.

Since pastel is a dry medium, pastel paintings must be framed under glass with spacers or matting to prevent smudging. When properly framed and with reasonable care, a pastel painting is every bit as long-lived as an oil painting.

What kind of background will the portrait have?
Portraits look better with simple backgrounds and less clutter around the subject. Backgrounds add richness, depth and warmth to the portrait. To enhance your portrait you may choose from one of the classic looks below or tell us what kind of background you would like.

How long does a portrait take?
Pastel paintings can be completed and shipped within 2 weeks. Waiting times can vary depending on work load. Please allow a minimum of four weeks for any deadline. (Shorter deadlines can be met if necessary - please contact us to arrange. For Christmas orders - Pastel painting orders must be submitted no later than November 30th.
Note: Oil paintings take a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks to complete and for drying time. We will try to accommodate rush orders if possible. No oil painting orders for Christmas delivery will be accepted after November 20th.

What if I don't like the portrait or want to make a change?
The artist will provide a digital photo of the finished portrait by e-mail attachment or mail for your approval, along with Portrait Proof form. This is your chance to suggest any changes. If you are satisfied with the photo of the portrait, just sign the Portrait Proof form and send it back to us. If, for any reason, you are not satisfied, please clearly state the reason for your dissatisfaction on the Portrait Proof form. The artist will address your concerns, make any necessary changes, and send you a second proof with for your approval. Your portrait will be shipped to you only after you have approved the final digital image.
